Positive self-talk

1 March 2018 saw World Compliment Day grow as a worldwide initiative. Originating in the Netherlands, it was created to be ‘the most positive day in the world’. On the day you’re encouraged to sincerely offer a compliment to three people in your life, either in person or online.

You can also use self-talk to compliment yourself!

Self-talk is your internal chatter and the inner voice that runs throughout the day. It helps you to process your day and experiences. You might not always be aware of it, but self-talk is important as it can impact how you feel.

Some of us tend to be negative with our self-talk: “I never get anything right” or “I am always failing”. The more we do negative self-talk, the more we feel bad about ourselves. To flip this around, try some positive self-talk. Studies suggest that positive self-talk can improve your self-esteem while reducing stress and anxiety.

Why not give it a go? Try thinking positive things and give yourself a compliment. Positive self-talk takes practice but you can start today. Try complimenting yourself when you do something well. It can be simple: “I did a great job making up the bed today” or “I look great today”.
