I feel anxious but do I have anxiety?

Most of us know that feeling of anxiousness, nervousness and worry. We may feel anxious before an important event like a job interview, presentation, or moving to a new place. These feelings are unpleasant, but they should go away once the event or situation has ended.

I feel anxious – do I have anxiety?

When your anxious feelings do not go away after an event has ended, or you don’t know why you are feeling anxious, you may have anxiety. When anxiety is constant and doesn’t go away, it starts to impact our day-to-day lives. You may skip events you used to enjoy or avoid certain situations, and your relationships may suffer. Anxiety can also cause physical symptoms such as sweating, quick breathing, trembling, restlessness, upset stomach and nausea.

If you think you have anxiety, you should speak to your GP or call one of our SuicideLine Victoria counsellors on 1300 651 251. One in four Australians will experience anxiety over their lifetime, so it is not uncommon. You can speak to a health professional to find ways to cope with your anxiety.
