During the 2008 to 2009 financial year SuicideLine responded to almost 10,000 calls from people across the state.
Just over two-thirds of calls to the service were from females (65%) with the balance being made by males (35%).
Most callers are aged between 35 to 44 years (37%) or 25 to 34 years (31%). Smaller but not insubstantial proportions of calls are received from people aged 15 to 24 years (14%), 45 to 54 years (10%) or 55 to 64 years (7%).
The vast majority of people who access Suicide Line are concerned about their own suicidal thoughts or behaviours (84%). The remaining 16% are either calling about someone else who may be suicidal (14%), or calling the service because they knew someone who has died as a result of suicide (2%).
